Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums and bones that support the teeth. A common cause of Periodontitis is plaque buildup. As the plaque builds up, gums begin to pull away from the teeth which create pockets where bacteria can easily grow. As the body tries to fight off the bacteria it can cause the surrounding teeth to wear down. If not treated, this may cause bone loss, severe gum recession, and tooth loss.
